Topper

Topper. Middle class of India has been the most vulnerable class to this phenomena. Every parent wants his/her child to be on the top. And, in this exercise to proclaim their child to be so called "Topper"; they at times forget that everybody can't be a Topper.

It is always the topper, who gets most of the limelight. With the fear of sounding self contrary, I will say that society has been changing and the parents, mostly the educated ones who have already gone through the tussle of this topper-shopper ,understand that the being a Topper is not the mission accomplished. They have to provide enough ammunition to their child to face this world, which is no less than a war. But I feel lower middle class is still married to the word Topper. I hope, as India and world progresses, life gets better for a non-Topper like me.

Though I have restricted my talk to toppers in the education, this phenomenon of Topper is present in all the spheres to life. If we take the scenario of corporate world, it is usually the boss who is paid the highest package. All the important decisions are taken by him and whatever he/she says is the final.Though this is important for decision making, but, at times he forgets that he/she is nothing without his sub-ordiantes. They are the pillars on which he builds his empire. Boss in this case can be compared to the Topper. Some of my friends might differ on that. With globalization and more exposure, situation is getting better, but there is still a lot to be accomplished and lot to be done to change the mindset and psyche of the people.

I am not against Toppers and I am in no way advocating mediocrity. I strongly feel that one should always endeavor to be Numero Uno in whatever he/she does. There have always been toppers and they will always be there. But what we should not forget is that there are people below the toppers, who also add value and who have come in this world to play some important role.Chalo. Enjoy everybody and a Happy New Year 2008.Don't forget, there is only one life, make most out of it irrespective of whether you are a Topper or not .
